What independent testing reports
TechSpot’s November 2024 review ran 45 games at 1080p with a GeForce RTX 4090 and found the 9800X3D 8% faster on average than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with up to 21% in some titles. The review predates later X3D models, so check newer results before comparing with them. Those are TechSpot’s findings, not TWW measurements.
Potential strengths
- Large L3 cache aimed at latency-sensitive gaming workloads.
- TechSpot measured an average 8% gaming lead over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D across 45 games, and 11% across the 30 games with larger margins.
- AM5 is a current desktop platform with DDR5 support.
Limitations and buying cautions
- Gains varied by game; TechSpot found some titles with under 1% or no improvement.
- TechSpot’s review did not cover productivity or power consumption, so check other sources for those.
- A cooler and a compatible AM5 motherboard are additional costs; confirm BIOS support before upgrading.
Who should consider it?
- High-refresh-rate gaming builds
- AM5 builders comparing X3D options and their price differences
- Players who are CPU-limited at 1080p or 1440p
